Modeling Peripersonal Action Space for Virtual Humans by Learning a Tactile Body Schema
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose a computational model for building a tactile body schema for a virtual human. The learned body structure of the agent can enable it to acquire a perception of the space surrounding its body, namely its peripersonal space. The model uses tactile and proprioceptive informations and relies on an algorithm which was originally applied with visual and proprioceptive sensor data. As there is not only a technical motivation for devising such a model but also an application of peripersonal action space, an interaction example with a virtual agent is described and the idea of extending the reaching space to a leanforward space is presented.

متن کاملFrom body space to interaction space: modeling spatial cooperation for virtual humans
This paper introduces a model which connects representations of the space surrounding a virtual humanoid’s body with the space it shares with several interaction partners. This work intends to support virtual humans (or humanoid robots) in near space interaction and is inspired by studies from cognitive neurosciences on the one hand and social interaction studies on the other hand. We present o...
متن کاملVisual peripersonal space centred on the face in humans.
A convergent series of studies in monkeys and man suggests that the computation of visual space is performed in several brain regions for different behavioural purposes. Among these multiple spatial areas, the ventral intraparietal cortex, the putamen and the ventral aspect of the premotor cortex (area 6) contain a system for representing visual space near the face (peripersonal space). In thes...
متن کاملBeyond the window: multisensory representation of peripersonal space across a transparent barrier.
A large body of neuropsychological evidence has been recently provided showing that humans can code visual objects in nearby space through multisensory visuo-tactile integrative processes, which share several similarities with the functional properties of bimodal neurons documented in neurophysiological studies. In particular, the phenomenon of visuo-tactile extinction reveals that crossmodal i...
متن کاملOthers' Actions Reduce Crossmodal Integration in Peripersonal Space
Specific mechanisms integrate visual-tactile information close to the body to guide voluntary action [1, 2] and to enable rapid self-defense in peripersonal space [3-5]. In social interactions, others frequently act in one's peripersonal space, thereby changing the relevance of near-body events for one's own actions. Such changes of stimulus relevance may thus affect visual-tactile integration....
